Step beyond the shoreline of Progreso and journey into the heart of an ancient world where pyramids rise from the jungle and hidden waters shimmer beneath the earth.
This adventure blends history, mystery, and natural wonder — beginning at the legendary ruins of Mayapan, once the last great capital of the Maya civilization.
After your ship docks, meet your guide just outside the cruise terminal and settle into comfortable, air-conditioned transportation. As you travel inland through the Yucatán countryside, your guide will bring the ancient world to life with stories of kings, warriors, astronomy, and sacred rituals.
An hour later, the jungle opens — and there it stands.
Encircling the site is a massive defensive wall stretching 5.65 miles (9.1 km), one of the largest known in all of Mesoamerica. Within these stone boundaries once lived an estimated 12,000 inhabitants during the Late Postclassic period. Mayapán was a thriving political and ceremonial powerhouse — and you’re about to walk its sacred grounds.
Follow your guide through plazas and ceremonial spaces to the imposing Temple of Kukulcán, a striking pyramid reminiscent of Chichén Itzá yet quieter, more intimate, and wonderfully uncrowded. Wander among colonnaded halls, shrines, altars, and sanctuaries where priests once performed rituals beneath the Yucatán sun. For about 45 minutes, you’ll explore the city’s most significant structures, standing where rulers once governed and ceremonies once echoed through the stone corridors.
Then the adventure turns underground.
A short 15-minute ride brings you to Nayah Cenote, a hidden freshwater cavern tucked deep within the jungle. Step out into the lush greenery and follow your guide to a wooden staircase descending into the earth. As you make your way 27 feet (9 meters) down, the air cools and light filters through the opening above.
Then you see it.
A vast underground pool of crystalline blue water stretches before you — 72 feet long, 78 feet wide, and plunging to depths of 88 feet. Limestone walls curve around you, marked by time and nature. The atmosphere is serene, almost sacred.
Take a breath — and jump.
From the wooden platform, dive into the refreshing freshwater below and feel the cool embrace of one of the Yucatán’s most treasured natural wonders.
After about 30 minutes of swimming and soaking in the magic of this underground oasis, you’ll return to your transportation and head back toward Progreso. Once in the city center, you may hop on the complimentary shuttle back to your cruise ship or, if time allows, explore the local shops and seaside charm on your own.
Ancient capitals. Jungle pathways. Hidden cenotes.
This isn’t just a shore excursion — it’s a journey into the soul of the Maya world.
