Get ready to step back in time and uncover the mysteries of the ancient Maya on an unforgettable adventure into the heart of Belize.
Your journey begins the moment you are picked up at the port, where your knowledgeable local guide welcomes you and brings Belize’s vibrant culture and fascinating history to life. As you travel through the city and into the countryside on your way to the legendary Altun Ha Maya Ruins, your guide will share captivating stories about Belize’s diverse people, traditions, and rich heritage.
Along the scenic drive, you’ll pass through lush tropical landscapes and glimpse Belize’s incredible ecosystems, filled with towering palms, dense greenery, and native wildlife.
Soon you’ll arrive at Altun Ha, one of Belize’s most impressive archaeological sites. Once a thriving ceremonial and trading center of the Maya civilization, this ancient city is surrounded by jungle and filled with structures that have stood for over a thousand years. As you explore the site, your guide will reveal the secrets of the Maya world and the significance of the temples and plazas that made Altun Ha an important hub of Maya life.
One of the highlights of the visit is the chance to climb one of the tallest temples. From the top, you’ll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding rainforest and ancient ruins—an unforgettable photo opportunity. You’ll also stand beside the sacred altar where the Maya once burned offerings to their gods.
After exploring the temples, your adventure continues at the on-site museum, where you’ll see fascinating artifacts and relics that offer a deeper glimpse into the culture and daily life of the Maya.
But the adventure doesn’t stop there. After leaving the ruins, you’ll head to the village of Hattieville where the off-road portion of your journey begins. Hop into a Jeep Wrangler and drive through scenic jungle trails toward the village of Gracy Rock. During the rainy season, these trails can become muddy, adding an exciting mudding experience to the ride.
Along the way, you’ll stop at a hidden dry cave system in the Maya Mountains. With helmets and lights, you can explore inside to see impressive stalactites, natural rock formations, and even pieces of ancient pottery. Guests who prefer can skip the cave portion and relax nearby.
The adventure continues to the village of Freetown Sibun, where you’ll enjoy a delicious Belizean lunch featuring rice and beans, stew chicken, fried plantains, and potato salad. Refresh with purified bottled water or a Belizean soda, and local beer will also be available for purchase.
After a day filled with history, nature, and adventure, you’ll relax on the return journey to Belize City, arriving back at the port with plenty of time before your ship’s departure.
